Generate Note Cards With AI

Have you ever used flash cards?  They are a proven tool to help you study and retain knowledge about a subject. The digital age allows us to bring decks of these study cards anywhere from our phones. A popular tool for this is the app named Anki.  Anki Logo Anki is an, often free, flashcard app that goes far beyond traditional memorization tools. Its key feature is spaced repetition, a proven learning technique based on how our memory works (Mehta et al., 2023). Instead of reviewing all your flashcards equally, Anki  schedules each card based on how well you know it. Cards you struggle with appear more frequently, while those you’ve mastered are shown less often. This targeted review system boosts retention and makes the most out of your study time. How fast can you make 300 flash cards? Flash cards take time to make. By hand, I can probably write one in about 5 seconds. So for 300 Flash cards, that might take 25 minutes of nonstop writing. Looking up the information takes time too. If each card takes at least 5 seconds of research, that amounts to 50 minutes for 300 flash cards. That is 6 cards per minute (CPM). Read on to hear how now I create over 600 cards per minute! My Scenario Immersive Learning Immersive Learning has been shown to be an effective tool in learning another language (Nie et al., 2022). Think about how you learned your first language. As a child, you did not read a textbook on language. Instead, you likely had family calling you by your name or asking if you were hungry. You would hear movies on TV, or listen to songs in the car. You learned through experience. Today, a great way to learn a new language is to immerse yourself in it. Watch videos, listen to music, write a journal or talk to native speakers as much as you can. I have started to do this by taking Japanese songs, breaking them into pieces, and translating them to English. The first song I translated for this was “Ue o Muite Arukou” by Kyu Sakamoto.  https://youtu.be/N4hh28_hdD8?si=6TNaqLQaaEId4MUR Translating Japanese Japanese to English is one of the more difficult pairs to translate. One quality about Japanese that makes it challenging for translation is it’s reliance on context. In spoken language, the same word may have multiple sounds. Similar to how in English, many may struggle with “There, their, and they’re”. However; these occur much more commonly in Japanese. Take the word “hashi”. This one word has three meanings. Depending on the context, it could mean edge, bridge, chopsticks.  Even characters may have multiple pronunciations. See the Example Below: 上  (jou “joe”) as in 上手 (jouzu) meaning skillfully. (ue “ooh-ehh”) as in 上 (ue) meaning above.  These challenges even effect popular tools like Google Translate. The below example uses the word “hashi” 4 times. The sentence should read something like “While eating with chopsticks on the bridge, I was looking at the edge of the bridge”. “Hashi” was used 4 times in our input, Google Translate uses a translation of “hashi” twice in the output, and only 1 translation “chopsticks”.  Large Language Models (LLMs), also called AI, like ChatGPT are able to better address the context of the sentence, and provided better output even in difficult situations.  My Solution ChatGPT Translation To provide better translations, and save time, I decided to use ChatGPT to facilitate my translations. It’s common to use the ChatGPT website, and manually type messages to it. Alternatively, you can integrate ChatGPT directly into a program with something called an “API”. An API is like a mailbox, where two programs can send and receive messages to each other.  These API’s often cost money to provide the service. ChatGPT offers many versions, or “models”, of ChatGPT, each performing differently and for a different price. I tested these, and found that the 4o-mini model was both affordable, and adequate quality. When using it, you are billed per million “tokens”. Tokens can be complex to calculate, so i will use an example. I could translate the song mentioned earlier about 22 times for just 1 penny.  AI Deck Generator for Anki ToolDeveloped with Python In Japanese, it’s important to understand how sentences are structured, the meanings of the words, and the meanings of the individual characters. So ideally, I would like to practice all of the above, from Japanese to English, and English to Japanese. This means building 6 decks of different cards, for just 1 song. The structure would look something like this: We can help automate this process with a programming language called “Python”. With Python, we can take the song lyrics as input, remove any non Japanese text, message ChatGPT for a context dependent translation, and bundle the results into structured decks ready to load into Anki.  And as an added bonus, it connects to another tool, called VOICEVOX, which provides sound for each card.  How I Create 600 Flash Cards Per Minute The AI Deck Generator for Anki tool helps me go from creating 6 cards per minute (CPM), to over 600 for less than a penny. This can turn an hour of work, into less than a minute of button clicks. This helps someone spend less time on labor, and more on learning.

Stone Tower: Lynn’s Landmark

Atop the highest point in Lynn, the historic Stone Tower offered an interesting subject to 3D scan with photogrammetry. This capture was performed with a DJI Mini 4 Pro and 254 photos shot in less-than-ideal weather. Despite high winds, drained batteries, and harsh sunlight, the result is a detailed 3D mesh that preserves the tower’s detailed masonry. The Process Drone-based photogrammetry makes it possible to capture large structures that are difficult to document with handheld cameras. The DJI Mini 4 Pro’s high-resolution camera (8064×6048) provides exceptional detail in each image, enhancing the quality of the 3D reconstruction. While the sunny weather felt great on the skin, it posed challenges for scanning. Harsh shadows on the building were captured in the images and carried over into the 3D model. This “baked-in” lighting may be acceptable depending on the output. When used in scenes with different lighting conditions, it may reduce the realism depending where the model is placed . After generating the initial scan, I apply both automated and manual techniques to optimize the 3D model. This process significantly reduces file size and loading time while preserving the original visual detail when textures are applied. The result was a 99.12% reduction in face count, and a 99.37% reduction in file size.  About the Tower This tower was built on the highest point in Lynn MA in 1936. It’s purpose was for fire observation. The tower stands about 48 to 50 feet tall with a cube-shaped base and an octagonal structure topped by arched windows. On clear days, you can see all the way to Boston from the top! The interior of the Stone Tower may be visited from Tuesday through Saturday, between 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, if a park ranger is available. It may also be visited separately by appointment.  Bringing the Tower to Life in 3D Capturing the Stone Tower was not just a technical challenge; it was also a great opportunity to connect with locals. The process sparked genuine curiosity from morning hikers passing by. Several people stopped to ask about the drone and the scanning process, showing how engaging this technology can be.  If you are interested in learning more about photogrammetry or have a structure you would like to see brought into 3D, feel free to reach out. Design: Adam’s Family Vintage & Restoration

In design, each detail tells a story. When the Adam’s family reached out to partner, I was eager to translate their unique story into a design ready for the web. Using Squarespace, I built a clean and welcoming site that reflects their values, highlights their unique inventory, and makes it easy for customers to explore, request, and connect. Color Meaning From the warmth of vintage wood tones to the calm of well-loved classics, the palette sets the tone for the services the Adam’s family provides. This earthy orange suggests creativity, nostalgia, and approachability. It feels inviting and familiar, like a favorite vintage find or grandma’s living room. It encourages action without being loud, making it ideal for calls to action and highlights Warm Orange #D18857 Deep Blue #426C9F A muted blue communicates stability, clarity, and calm. Like the waves of the ocean, you can always count on them to come and go with rhythm. It helps ground the design, offering a sense of trust and structure.  Keep It Simple Could you fit a whole website on one page? Sure, but why would you? Just like a clean dinner table brings focus to the food and leaves space ready for the next meal, a simple design highlights what matters most. White space or empty backgrounds might seem like wasted room, but they actually help content stand out. For example, the New Arrivals section uses space around each item to draw the eye clearly to what is important. By keeping the design uncluttered, users can easily find what they are looking for without distractions. Sometimes, making space is the best way to serve the main course. The Client Nick, the head of the Adams family, has been an esteemed chef for over a decade. For years, people have invited him to fill their stomachs, and now they invite him to fill their homes with elegant, sustainable furniture. Nick shared with me the mission of his business and his goals for the website. The Squarespace platform was chosen as a single-cost solution that offers flexibility and growth potential. As his business evolves, Nick will feel empowered to make his own updates or request assistance for expanded features, such as setting up online sales. Looking forward to seeing the business thrive and hoping the website supports Nick’s vision every step of the way. Conclusion This project gave me a great opportunity to apply my design principles in a new medium, Squarespace, and create a website that truly reflects Adam’s Family Vintage & Restoration. The final result is a clean, inviting space that conveys the brand’s warmth, craftsmanship, and professionalism. From thoughtful color choices to strategic use of white space, every element was designed to highlight what matters most and support the client’s goals. Adam’s Family Vintage now has a site that looks great and offers room to grow as their business evolves. Visit Adam’s Family Vintage & Restoration Are you considering creating a website? I would love to bring the same care and creativity to your vision. Let’s create something meaningful together.

Japan Trip 2025

Trains that glide at incredible speeds, conveyor belts that deliver meals, and cities lit by glowing neon and robotic charm. Especially in Tokyo, the future seems to meet the present. Tsutenkaku Osaka Tsutenkaku Osaka every present moment is grown from what came before. Like a tree rising tall into the sky, its strength depends on the roots buried deep beneath it. Japan has deep roots. The cultures, rituals, and reverence stretch far back into time. Primeval Forest Primeval Forest Just an hour from Kyoto, the primeval forest of Nara still grows untouched beyond its footpaths. Here, nature is given space to grow. Towering mossy trees, cherry blossoms falling like snow, gentle deer crossing your path, and a sky that opens wide, these are reminders of the quiet strength of nature, and the bounty it delivers when we harmonize with it. Mt. Wakakusa Mt. Wakakusa Mt. Wakakusa Nara Deer Tradition coexists with daily life. Shinto shrines marked by red torii gates appear  tucked between skyscrapers, lining forest paths, or perched on restaurant shelves. Buddhist temples are just as common. Both invite moments of stillness, gratitude, remembrance, and trust in what’s ahead. While popular sites can feel crowded, peace isn’t far. Stepping even briefly off the communal path can reveal something quieter. A view less photographed. A moment more your own. Often, a moment of presence and reflection. Where calm arrives, and something lasting may take root. Sensoji Temple Kotoku-in Temple The past nurtures our present, and our present carries the responsibility to shape a more thoughtful future. In Japan, tradition and innovation exist side by side. They move together, not apart. When we slow down and pay attention, we start to see how memory shapes progress. With care and intention, we can grow something lasting.
